Abstract

Background. The most important condition for existence of a language is its continuous development, which we can notice in the appearance of new words and new meanings of words. Neologisms are widely presented in the language of periodicals. This explains the timeliness of this study, which is devoted to the stylistic features of neologisms in the language of the German press.
Materials and methods. The author used the theoretical (including study and analysis of the linguistic literature) methods and practical (including linguostylistic analysis of a text) methods. Using these methods the author investigated the articles from the German magazine «Der Spiegel».
Results. The study analyzes points of view of many authors on the nature of lexical innovations, discovers the main ways of creating neologisms. Among the advantages of this study is the analysis of neologisms’ stylistic possibilities created using word-building, secondary nomination and linguistic borrowings.
Conclusions. Neologisms as an integral part of journalistic texts present special features of the functional press and journalistic style. The most expressive neologisms in terms of style are neologisms created by such means as the transposition, derivation and stem-composition. Stem-composition is the most productive way to create neologisms. Borrowings-neologisms also play an important role in texts of press and journalism. First of all, using such neologisms the author can describe a variety of national, social, professional types of speech and characters. Furthermore, borrowings-neologisms have a high potential in creation of euphemisms and expressive synonyms to words in the German language. The author underlines that stylistic capacity of neologisms from the articles of «Der Spiegel» express primarily the following style features: expressiveness, emotionality, conclusiveness, objectivity/subjectivity and cogency.

Key words

neologisms, means of word formation in German language, transposition, derivation, stem-composition, stylistic capacity of neologisms.
